What is a residence card?

The residence card is a residence permit issued by the voivode to foreigners who have received a temporary or permanent residence permit in Poland. The card during its validity period confirms the identity of the foreigner and, together with a valid travel document (passport), gives the right to cross the border without the need to obtain a visa. In addition, it allows a 90-day stay in the member states of the Schengen area.

How to get a residence card?

To get a residence card, you should contact the Regional Office (Urząd Wojewódzki). The main documents required for this procedure:

  • completed application for a residence card,
  • actual photo,
  • photocopy of a valid travel document (passport).

In addition, when submitting an application, a foreigner must provide fingerprints. Depending on the purpose of your stay in Poland, you may need a number of other documents – in the case of labor migration, you need the Information of the Headman (a document on the impossibility of meeting the staffing needs of the employer by Polish citizens).
A temporary residence permit in Poland is issued for a period of 3 months to 3 years with the possibility of extension. It all depends on the time required by the foreigner to achieve the purpose of the stay. An application for a residence permit must be submitted no later than the last day of legal stay on the territory of the Republic of Poland. The fees associated with obtaining a residence permit are about PLN 500, including the cost of issuing a card.
After submitting an application, sometimes even several months are expected for a response, but if the application was submitted correctly and all the necessary documents that were missing were reported within 7 days, the stay in Poland is considered legal after receiving a seal from the voivode. The stay is legal until the date of the final decision on granting a temporary residence permit. It is worth noting that the seal itself does not give permission to travel to the Schengen countries. Upon receipt of a refusal to issue a residence permit, you must leave Poland no later than within 30 days.

Why do I need a residence card?

The residence card allows you to stay legally on the territory of the Republic of Poland for the purpose of work, study, research or moving with your family. It also allows you to safely return to your country without having to re-apply for a visa. Having a residence permit, you do not need to worry about the way to confirm your identity or other formal issues related to your stay in Poland. In addition, it also allows you to travel to all Schengen countries.
